IN THIS GUIDE · Identify the industrial designer’s contribution within a shared portfolio
Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Explain the contribution before describing the result
Identify which design decisions, specifications or development tasks the applicant performed and what engineers, technicians or other designers contributed. Explain material drafting, production or sales duties too. A portfolio’s visual quality cannot establish that the actual proposed work belongs to the listed profession.
Apply the Industrial Designer credential route
The listing permits a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a qualifying postsecondary diploma or certificate with three years of experience. The diploma definition concerns at least two years at an accredited Canadian or U.S. postsecondary institution; the certificate has defined Mexican program and issuer requirements. A short course is not automatically such a credential. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable foreign-credential evaluation.
Document a temporary professional arrangement
The principal must be a Canadian or Mexican citizen with prearranged qualifying work and temporary entry. A U.S. or foreign employer may arrange the services. Work for a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant is prohibited TN self-employment; a project lead does not cure that ownership issue. A foreign business interest alone is not an automatic exclusion. Use the actual applicable visa or admission process before work.
Start with the work that will actually be performed
Where a technologist can obtain a provincial engineering licence, the listing's alternative becomes available, and the licence is a clean document for an officer to read. Order a certified transcript and degree confirmation from the registrar, locate a citizenship certificate or passport, and, if professional registration is relevant, request a letter of standing from the body that holds it. Engineer requires a baccalaureate or licence; Scientific Technician/Technologist requires theoretical knowledge of a discipline and the ability to solve practical problems, with the work performed in direct support of a professional in that field. The applicant should carry the original licence, degree, transcripts, the signed offer letter, proof of citizenship, and evidence of intent to depart at the end of the period. A school’s new name neither supplies a missing qualification nor invalidates an otherwise relevant award; experience cannot universally replace the required education. A Canadian professional normally seeks TN classification through border inspection or preclearance; in some cases the U.S. employer submits an I-129 petition to USCIS before the changed work begins. Confirm as well that the letter describes the profession by the qualification actually relied on, since the profession-specific requirement is assessed against the person’s credentials rather than against the job title the company happens to use internally. The applicant should also warn the institution promptly about a changed departure date, a delayed credential evaluation or a family circumstance that moves the start, because an institution told late may already have offered the position to someone else.
