THE SHORT ANSWER

A Markstay-Warren resident may be discussing both a Canadian citizenship application and a possible US professional role. Put the two processes on separate timelines. An employer needs an accurate statement of citizenship already held, not a prediction presented as an accomplished fact.

01

Identify the nationality available now

TN principals must be Canadian or Mexican citizens. Canadian permanent residence, education or a pending citizenship application cannot substitute for that condition. If Mexican citizenship is already held, assess the corresponding procedure rather than assuming residence in Canada permits the Canadian admission approach. Keep identity evidence distinct from the résumé and from the employer’s willingness to wait.

02

Use the waiting period to clarify the real job

The employer can explain duties, qualifications, compensation and duration while eligibility is assessed. That useful preparation does not supply missing citizenship or authorize work. If the proposal instead involves an L-1 transfer, examine the qualifying foreign employment, company relationship and actual US role. An E-2 inquiry needs treaty nationality, qualifying enterprise ownership, investment and development-and-direction facts. Neither category becomes available simply because TN is unavailable.

03

Make household commitments depend on confirmed facts

Record which decision must occur before an intended start or move. Review each relative’s citizenship, relationship and proposed work separately; the principal’s hoped-for citizenship outcome does not create dependent permission. A later citizenship decision may change the analysis, but it does not retroactively authorize earlier work. Bring the current facts to review and update them when an actual notice or document arrives.
