IN THIS GUIDE · Connect a prior-name qualification with the current professional offer
Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Explain the identity history without changing the diploma
Keep the original credential and appropriate evidence connecting the former and current names. Ask the institution what it can authenticate if an employer requests confirmation. Do not alter a historical diploma or assume an employer’s spelling preference changes the qualification. Translation and identity evidence serve different purposes.
Apply the profession’s actual alternatives
Engineer permits a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a state or provincial licence. Identify which listed alternative the applicant relies on; experience is not an unrestricted substitute. A degree from an institution outside Canada, Mexico or the United States requires a reliable foreign-credentials evaluation. Licensing for practice can raise a separate question even when immigration qualification evidence is available.
Assess the employment as well as the credential
TN requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship, prearranged listed professional activity and temporary entry. Record duties, pay, duration and the recipient of services. Services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant constitute prohibited TN self-employment; foreign ownership alone is not that bar. Canadian citizens generally may seek TN admission without a visa, while Mexican citizens generally need a TN visa.
Apply the specific credential rule for the listed profession
Institutions differ in what they offer: a replacement parchment, a certified true copy, an official transcript, or a registrar's letter confirming the degree and conferral date. TN credential requirements are profession-specific and come from the listing itself, not from general rules about degrees. Present the documents so the connection is obvious without narration: the original diploma, the transcript, the registrar's letter identifying the predecessor and the merger, and any translation or evaluation with its source document attached. Before choosing a procedure, isolate the proposed period of work, the named U.S. recipient, and the reason a listed profession rather than a sales title matches the deliverables. A Canadian citizen may apply at the port of entry or the cooperative may file an I-129 petition; either way the officer compares the letter with the governing documents if asked. Assemble the technology diploma, course transcripts, any field certification, continuing-education records, and project evidence showing practical problem-solving or application of the discipline. A technologist admitted to support engineering work who is then assigned to supervise a sheet-metal line has left the profession claimed, and any later extension or re-entry will be measured against what actually happened.
Health-care worker certification is a separate admission requirement
USMCA Appendix 2 lists the professions eligible for TN and states the minimum qualification for each. Land surveying appears among the USMCA professional categories, and that category carries its own credential requirement, which may be satisfied by a qualifying degree or by the appropriate licence. Review the exact profession entry, credential evidence and any applicable health-worker or licensing process together, without assuming that a hospital’s hiring approval settles immigration or practice permission. A consulting label, a Canadian business registration or a client’s preferred start date does not establish the listed profession or the applicant’s qualifications. Meeting the TN credential rule also does not provide every licence needed to practise in the U.S. jurisdiction.
