Start with the TN eligibility and application overview

01

Define what the engagement asks the applicant to do

Identify the problem to be assessed, expected recommendations and who will make and execute decisions. Do not assume every manager giving advice becomes a TN Management Consultant, or omit ongoing operating duties that the client actually expects. The evidence should explain the genuine professional activity rather than merely a favourable contract heading.

02

Use the listed qualification alternatives accurately

Management Consultant permits a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or equivalent professional experience established by a statement or professional credential attesting to five years as a management consultant or five years in a specialty related to the consulting agreement. Do not replace the required experience account with an unsupported résumé claim. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable evaluation.

03

Keep nationality and temporary work conditions explicit

The principal must be a Canadian or Mexican citizen with prearranged qualifying professional activity and temporary entry. A U.S. or foreign employer may arrange the work. Services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant are prohibited TN self-employment; an advisory board or supervisor does not cure that arrangement. Foreign business ownership alone is not an automatic bar. Use the applicable procedure before U.S. work begins.

04

The employer letter must describe professional practice

The letter should state the profession by its listed name, describe duties that are forestry duties, such as inventory, harvest planning, regeneration assessment and compliance with state forest-practice rules, and give the location, remuneration and intended length of stay. Once the available records are in hand, counsel can assess whether they support the credential the chosen profession requires under the listing, or whether the transcript itself is needed. Published guidance treats a Scientific Technician or Technologist as working in direct support of a professional in one of those listed disciplines. Requesting transcripts, ordering a credential evaluation, asking the institution to restate the appointment terms and having counsel assess the proposed profession can each be repeated or corrected at no lasting cost. The letter should describe the systems analysed, the requirements gathered and the design decisions made, in enough detail that the officer can recognise the listed profession. Where the degree title and the profession diverge, those three records together decide whether the qualification is in the field, and a letter from the university confirming the economics concentration helps. Whether TN admission requires a licence depends instead on how the profession is listed, since some listings name a state or provincial licence as an alternative to a degree while others do not mention licensure at all. A letter that reads like a technician posting invites an inspector to conclude the work is not a listed profession.Compare the proposed week of duties against the listed profession before signing the letter.
