Which records connect an asset sale to my investment?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

The evidence should explain lawful acquisition, the sale and the path of the proceeds into the investment. The final transfer alone is incomplete.

Follow ownership as well as money

Identify the seller’s rights, relevant historical records, closing deductions and intermediary accounts. Explain any jointly owned proceeds, gifts or loans on their actual terms. Keep the investment agreement and receipt linked to that history without assuming the recipient’s acknowledgement verifies the original lawful source.

Project or business updates, bank and financial statements showing capital remaining deployed, payroll registers and employment records, tax filings, and any correspondence from the sponsor about scope, schedule, or ownership changes. Demonstrating the path of funds is a banking exercise and fails on small things: a transfer through a relative's account made for convenience, a currency conversion at a private dealer, proceeds split across institutions and partly spent before being reassembled. Bills of sale for each machine, the assignment of the timber contracts, corporate resolutions authorising the wind-up, tax returns reporting the gain, payout statements from equipment lenders, and bank records showing every account the money passed through.
